What's your Vaguation?

So, your D-appt is on the way. What’s the situation down there?

It was a particularly rough morning. Not only was I nursing a hangover but I found myself spread-eagled on my gynecologist’s examination table wishing that my vaguation wasn’t as complicated as it was. What started as a small irritation after a hurried pre-D appointment shave, turned into a whole furuncle! This particular razor bump had grown into a painful, pus-filled abscess the size of a dime on my labia. It was the vengeance of my misdeeds coming to haunt me. Ughhh!

As my gyno numbed the infected area, I asked her why am I so prone to razor bumps and how could I prevent them? Her being a feminist, simply answered, “You have sensitive skin; stop shaving, let it grow!” Naturally, I laughed at her matter-of-factness but emphasized the impracticality of her suggestion as it relates to my unpredictable sex life — hot gyal problems. She then told me to either not care about my pubic hair or to laser it away. The determination to never find myself in such an uncomfortable vaguation again was never as strong as when I left the doctor’s office that day.

Irritated skin where it should be smooth?

Unfortunately, quite a few of us are prone to easily irritated skin —add melanin and coarse hair to that equation, and you’ll find yourself in a very hairy, possibly embarrassing vaguation.

Make your skin a priority

The truth is that women and body hair have a sordid “His-tory” but no matter your pubic hair situation, the integrity of your skin should be a priority.

Ladyscaping for smooth skin

I personally prefer to ladyscape, having smooth skin especially down there is important to me.

However, I find that any form of hair removal irritates me. Whether it is shaving, threading, sugaring or waxing, my hair follicles just seem to want to play me! Every time I’d attempt to groom my nether regions I end up with painful ingrowns that then turn into unsightly spots.

And then I tried laser hair removal...

Laser hair removal was the answer. More specifically, PeachFuzz Laser Skin Studio was my savior. Turns out that laser hair removal for black women requires not only black skin care expertise, but also a particular type of laser that prevents burning and the risk of hyperpigmentation. The light beam from the laser zaps the hair follicle and bulb, resulting in inhibited hair growth. You’ll see an immediate thinning of the hair that progresses over time until the hair stops growing altogether. The heat on your skin can feel spicy but that’s nothing numbing cream and an efficient tender-handed technician can’t relieve.
